An interview with the innkeeper(s) of Pension Bounty Bed & Breakfast

What is(are) your name(s)?

Muriel and Alain Ruiz

For how long have you been running a B&B?

6 years

Please share something about the history of your present bed and breakfast.

After living the hustle live of Paris we decided to move on an atoll and make a huge change in our life! We found this piece of land between ocean and lagoon with turquoise colors and built our bed and breakfast. We called it Bounty as that name sounded full of connotations both local and international: Mutiny of the Bounty, the famous film with Marlon Brando; the well known brand of chocolate. It is only when we got our first English speaking guests that we learned that it was also an English adjective meaning a lot of things we have to live up to!!!

What are the unique characteristics of your B&B?

The atoll of Rangiroa in French Polynesia has the most spectacular views in he world. Our bed and breakfast is a perfect place for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle. At a few steps from the beach of both the lagoon and the ocean, Pension Bounty is a prime location for scuba divers and for those loving to watch the sun rise or sun set over the clear and sparkling water. At Tiputa Chanel, a half mile away you can see the dolphins playing and jumping the waves.

Based on your guests' opinions, what feature of your B&B has made their stay special?

Our guests said they like the way we welcome them and appreciate our availability. They like the fact that we organize everything about excursions, snorkeling and scuba diving. We have diner with them and they seem very happy about being around a table with guests of different nationalities. I love to help them translating their words in French, English, Spanish or Italian. Of course the best is the atoll itself and its sites and it is one of the best spots in the world for scuba diving.

Please describe in short your bed and breakfast and its general services and amenities.

From Tahiti Tourism Office Pension Bounty has received 2 Tiare, out of a maximum of 3. Thanks to the weather in Rangiroa the meals are taken outside all year around. A deck furnished with a large and unique table allows our guests to group together for breakfast and diner in front of the tropical garden. A free pick up is also offered by the restaurants around. We have diner with our guests and we serve grilled and cooked fish of very different varieties, fished a few hours before in the ocean and the lagoon. There is a library with some 300 books in 5 different languages, free bicycles and free Wi-Fi connection.

Dip your toes into the gorgeous soft pink sand of Les Sables Rose (‘The pink sands’), one of French Polynesia's most beautiful beaches. Located on the eastern end of Rangiroa's lagoon and easily reached on a day excursion from any of Rangiroa's resorts, the beach offers great swimming and snorkelling and is the ideal spot for a secluded picnic. Or snorkel amid colourful fish and coral at the famous ‘Blue Lagoon’ of Toeo’o; spot schools of dolphins playing in Avatoru Pass and Tiputa Pass; watch thousands of seabirds nesting at Île aux Oiseaux (Bird Island); or cruise out to L'ile Aux Recifs (Reef Island), renowned for its fossilised razor-sharp coral formations that have been created by erosion - just remember to take reef shoes.

About Rangiroa
Less commercial than Tahiti, Rangiroa offers the quintessential South Pacific experience: languid days spent beneath an endless blue sky in a landscape of untamed scenic beauty. And for those wanting a more active vacation, Rangiroa also provides an immense playground for water sports and day trips to explore nearby motus. World famous for scuba diving, Rangiroa is probably the most famous shark diving destination in the South Pacific, with more than 10 species commonly sighted. Be sure to visit Avatora or Tiputa Village for an insight into traditional South Sea island life. In Tiputa you can also enjoy great views from Tiputa Point on a picnic.

Dolphin watching
Take a dolphin-watching cruise, easily arranged from Pension Bounty. Or head to the public park at the western side of Tiputa Pass and watch playful dolphins frolicking and leaping high above the waves for free – best time is during the late afternoon.

Scuba Diving
Head to Tiputa Pass, recognized as one of the world’s greatest shark dive locations. Watch a breathtaking array of eagle rays, tuna, various species of sharks including grey- and black-tipped sharks, and schools of dolphins that gather around the reef entrance to the lagoon. Watch sharks cruise by harmlessly - but close enough to make your heart beat just a little faster. Tiputa is also a good place to spot whales, between July and August. Probably the best time here is between December and March, when huge hammerhead sharks gather for the mating season. Tiputa is best for experienced divers as the current can be tricky; beginners should try inside the reef near Avatoru Pass and around the small islets sitting inside both passes. Typically, the water is so clear that visibility can reach 46m, and the temperature a constant 27°C.

Snorkelling
Grab your mask and fins and simply walk out the front door of the bed and breakfast and jump in: anywhere on the atoll of Rangiroa is great for snorkelling. Discover a rich variety of marine life in Rangiroa's lagoon or head to L'Ile aux Recifs beach, Papiro Point and Mahuta. For a unique adventure experience, try drift-snorkelling the Pass of Tiputa, known locally as ‘shooting the pass’: with visibility up to 35m, you can safely watch sharks, dolphins, turtles and rays swimming beneath you as you literally drift with the incoming current through the pass. Enjoy a day trip across the lagoon to Rangiroa's nearby islets, explore the bird sanctuary or watch the dolphins frolicking at Tiputa Pass.

Where is your B&B located and how it may be reached?

Rangiroa, the largest island in a string of 240 unspoiled coral atolls that make up the Tuamotu archipelago, is just an hour’s flight from Papeete, the capital of Tahiti.
Pension Bounty is located in Rangiroa Atoll and needs 1-hour flight to be reached. Therefore it is strongly recommended to book a Papeete - Rangiroa flight transfer before booking your stay at Pension Bounty.
Air France and Air Tahiti Nui run several fights per week from Los Angeles to Tahiti, then AIR TAHITI : www.airtahiti.aero and reservation@airtahiti.pf will take you to Rangiroa.
At Rangiroa airport you will see us waiting to welcome you, a sign written BOUNTY on it in hand.

What would you say to people who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast?

Guests are usually very happy to share the feeling and the impressions they get from the different Polynesian islands, excursions and dives they do with guests from other countries. In 6 years we have received guests from 58 different nationalities!
Is there something more that you want to share about your property?
You have read it, now it's time to live it!
